Drain cleaning in Hanover and nearby towns

A slow sink or a tub that holds water is easy to live with until it backs up. Most clogs build over months from grease, soap, hair, food scraps and wipes.

Signs you need drain cleaning

  • Water drains slowly or pools in the tub or shower
  • Gurgling sounds from drains or toilets
  • Bad smells coming up from a drain

What the job involves

Drain cleaning clears the blockage and gets water moving again. It covers single fixtures like a kitchen sink or shower and the main drain that carries everything out of the house. When more than one fixture is slow at once, the problem is usually further down the line.

  • Ask which drains are slow and when it started
  • Run water at nearby fixtures to find where the blockage sits
  • Clear the line with a hand or machine drain snake, or a water jet for heavy buildup

What affects the cost

A visit settles the price. Call and describe the problem; we will tell you what to expect.

  • Whether it is one fixture or the main drain
  • How easy it is to reach a cleanout
  • What the clog is made of: hair and soap, grease, roots or a foreign object
  • Whether a camera inspection is needed
  • Visits outside normal hours

What to expect on the day

  • A single fixture clog is often cleared in one visit
  • The plumber may need space in front of the sink, tub or basement cleanout
  • In Massachusetts, clearing a stoppage does not need a plumbing permit
  • If the same drain keeps clogging, expect a talk about what is causing it

Before we arrive

  • Note which drains are slow and whether toilets gurgle
  • Clear out the cabinet under the sink
  • Find the basement cleanout cap if you know where it is
  • Hold off on chemical drain openers before the visit; they can harm pipes and the person clearing the line

Call right away if

  • Sewage is backing up into a tub, floor drain or toilet: stop using water in the house and keep people away from the dirty water

Questions

Common questions

Are chemical drain cleaners safe to use?

They can loosen a light clog, but they are hard on older pipes and on septic systems, and they do little against roots or solid objects. If the chemical does not work, the drain is now full of a harsh liquid that anyone working on it has to deal with. A drain snake or a plunger is usually a safer first step.

Why does the same drain keep clogging?

Repeat clogs often point to something beyond the trap: grease buildup along the pipe, a sag that holds debris, roots in an underground line or a pipe that has cracked or shifted. A camera inspection shows what is inside the pipe so the fix matches the cause.

What should never go down a drain?

Cooking grease and oil, wipes of any kind, paper towels, dental floss, coffee grounds, cat litter, paint, solvents and medications. Toilets should only get human waste and toilet paper. These rules matter even more on a septic system, where grease and wipes can clog the tank and drainfield.
