Signs you need faucet or fixture repair

  • A faucet that drips after it is turned off
  • Water leaking around the base or under the sink
  • Shower temperature jumps when a toilet flushes

What the job involves

Fixture work covers repairs like new cartridges and washers, full replacements, and shower valves that keep water at a steady, safe temperature. New fixtures are also an easy way to use less water without losing performance.

  • Check the fixture, supply lines and shut-off valves
  • Repair worn parts such as cartridges, washers or O-rings, or remove the old fixture
  • Set the new fixture and connect supply and drain

What affects the cost

A visit settles the price. Call and describe the problem; we will tell you what to expect.

  • Repair versus replacement
  • The fixture itself and who supplies it
  • Condition of shut-off valves and supply lines
  • Shower valve work that requires opening a wall
  • Countertop or sink changes

What to expect on the day

  • Most faucet repairs and swaps are done in a short visit
  • Water to that fixture, or sometimes the house, will be off briefly
  • Repairing a leak in a faucet or valve does not need a permit in Massachusetts; new installations may
  • A shower valve swap may need access from behind or through the wall

Before we arrive

  • Have the new fixture on site, unopened, with its box and instructions
  • Clear out the cabinet under the sink
  • Check that the shut-off valves under the sink turn
  • Take a photo of the brand name on the old faucet to help find parts

Call right away if

  • A supply line under a sink bursts: close the shut-off valve under the sink, or the main valve if that one fails

Questions

Common questions

Why does my shower get hot when someone flushes?

Flushing pulls cold water away from the shower, so the mix swings hot. Newer pressure-balancing or thermostatic shower valves adjust for this and help prevent scalds, which the Consumer Product Safety Commission notes are a real risk for children and older adults.

Will a low-flow faucet feel weak?

Not usually. EPA WaterSense bathroom faucets and aerators use 1.5 gallons per minute or less, at least 30 percent less than the standard, and are tested for good flow. Simply swapping the aerator on an existing bathroom faucet is a low-cost way to save water.

Should I repair or replace a dripping faucet?

Many drips come from a worn cartridge or washer that is easy to replace. If the faucet is old, parts are hard to find, or the body is corroded, replacement often makes more sense. Shut-off valves under the sink are worth checking at the same time.

“They replaced two toilets and a vanity faucet in our upstairs bath. Neat work, and they explained everything before starting.”
