Leak and pipe repair in Hanover and nearby towns

A small leak can run for months inside a wall or under a floor before anyone sees it, and a burst pipe can flood a room in minutes. Leak repair starts with finding where the water is really coming from, which is not always where it shows up.

Signs you need leak and pipe repair

  • Water bill higher than usual with no change in use
  • Water meter moving when nothing is running
  • Stains, bubbling paint or soft spots on ceilings, walls or floors

What the job involves

Then the damaged section is repaired or replaced with the right material. Old valves, corroded fittings and pinhole leaks in aging copper are common in older homes.

  • Ask where the water shows up and when
  • Trace the leak to its source, using the water meter and opening access only where needed
  • Shut off and drain the affected section

What affects the cost

A visit settles the price. Call and describe the problem; we will tell you what to expect.

  • How easy the leak is to reach: open basement versus inside a finished wall
  • Pipe material and size
  • The number of leaks or the extent of corrosion
  • Emergency or after-hours timing
  • Wall or ceiling repair, which is usually separate

What to expect on the day

  • Water will be off to part or all of the house during the repair
  • Some access openings may be needed to reach hidden pipes
  • Drywall and finish repair are often a separate step
  • Repairing a leak in a faucet, valve or other working part does not need a permit in Massachusetts; replacing piping generally does

Before we arrive

  • Find and test your main water shut-off valve
  • Take photos of water stains or damage for your records
  • Clear the area under the leak and move valuables
  • Read your water meter at night and again in the morning with no water used to check for hidden leaks

Call right away if

  • A pipe has burst or water is pouring out: shut the main water valve right away
  • Water is near outlets, the electric panel or appliances: stay out of the wet area and shut off power at the panel only if you can reach it from a dry spot

Questions

Common questions

How can I tell if I have a hidden leak?

The EPA suggests reading your water meter, using no water for two hours and reading it again. If it moved, you probably have a leak. A winter water bill far higher than usual is another clue. For toilets, a few drops of food coloring in the tank that show up in the bowl after 10 minutes means the flapper leaks.

Where is my main water shut-off?

In most homes on town water, the main shut-off is where the water line comes through the foundation, often near the water meter in the basement. Homes on a well usually have a valve near the pressure tank. Find it before you need it, make sure it turns, and show everyone in the house.

Are small drips worth fixing?

Yes. The EPA estimates a faucet dripping once a second can waste more than 3,000 gallons a year, and household leaks often add up to thousands of gallons. Small leaks under sinks or behind walls can also rot wood and grow mold long before they look serious.
