Frozen pipe repair in Hanover and nearby towns

Massachusetts winters are hard on pipes in outside walls, crawl spaces, garages and unheated basements. When water freezes it expands, and that pressure can split a pipe.

Signs you need frozen pipe repair

  • Little or no water from a faucet in freezing weather
  • Frost on an exposed pipe
  • Bulging or cracked pipe

What the job involves

Often the leak only shows up when the ice melts. Frozen pipe service covers safely thawing lines, finding and repairing any splits, and protecting the weak spots so it does not happen again.

  • Find which lines are frozen and where
  • Thaw the pipe gradually with safe heat, with a faucet open
  • Check the thawed section for splits and leaks

What affects the cost

A visit settles the price. Call and describe the problem; we will tell you what to expect.

  • How many lines are frozen and how easy they are to reach
  • Whether a pipe has burst
  • Pipe inside finished walls or ceilings
  • Insulation or rerouting to prevent repeat freezing
  • Emergency or after-hours timing

Questions

Common questions

How do I safely thaw a frozen pipe?

The Red Cross advises keeping the faucet open and warming the pipe with a hair dryer, an electric heating pad or towels soaked in hot water, starting near the faucet. Keep space heaters away from anything that can burn and never leave them unattended. Never use a torch, propane heater or open flame.

How can I keep my pipes from freezing?

Keep the heat set to at least 55°F, even when away. Open cabinet doors under sinks on outside walls, let a faucet drip in a deep freeze, insulate pipes in cold spaces and seal drafts near them. Before winter, disconnect hoses and shut and drain outdoor faucets.

What should I do if a pipe bursts?

Shut off the main water valve right away. If water is near outlets or the electrical panel, stay out of the wet area. Open faucets to drain the lines, move valuables, and take photos for your insurance company before cleanup.
