Sump pumps in Hanover and nearby towns

In a wet spring or a heavy storm, a sump pump is what keeps groundwater out of the basement. It sits in a pit at the low point of the floor and turns on when water rises.

Signs you need sump pump service

  • Pump runs constantly or cycles on and off quickly
  • Pump hums but does not move water
  • Water in the basement after rain

What the job involves

Pumps wear out, floats stick and power often fails during the storms when they are needed most. This service covers new pumps, replacements, check valves, discharge lines, and battery or water-powered backups and alarms.

  • Check the pit, pump, float switch and power supply
  • Look at the discharge line and the check valve
  • Replace or install the pump sized for the pit and the lift

What affects the cost

A visit settles the price. Call and describe the problem; we will tell you what to expect.

  • Pedestal or submersible pump, and its capacity
  • Whether a new pit or new discharge line is needed
  • Battery or water-powered backup systems
  • Electrical work for a dedicated outlet
  • Access to the pit

What to expect on the day

  • A pump swap in an existing pit is usually done in one visit
  • You will be shown how to test the pump
  • Many towns do not allow sump water into the sewer, and it should never go into a septic system
  • New outlets or circuits are electrical work done by an electrician

Before we arrive

  • Clear the area around the sump pit
  • Note how often the pump runs in wet weather
  • Find where the discharge pipe exits outside
  • Check that the pump's outlet has power

Call right away if

  • Water is rising in the basement: do not step into standing water if outlets, cords or appliances are near it; shut off power at the panel only if you can reach it from a dry spot

Questions

Common questions

How do I test my sump pump?

Pour a bucket of water slowly into the pit. The float should rise, the pump should start, empty the pit and shut off. If it does not start, have it checked. Never reach into the pit; use a non-conductive tool if you need to move the float. InterNACHI suggests checking pumps at least once a year.

Do I need a backup sump pump?

Power outages often happen during the same storms that raise groundwater. A battery or water-powered backup keeps pumping when the main pump or the power fails. A high-water alarm is a low-cost add-on, especially for homes left empty for stretches of time.

Where should a sump pump drain?

Outside, well away from the foundation, and sloped so the water does not flow back toward the house. InterNACHI guidance suggests about 20 feet. Many places do not allow discharge into the sewer, and it should never go into a septic system or onto a neighbor's property.

“Sump pump died during the March storms. They swapped it the same afternoon and showed me how to test the backup.”
